Winter Woolies and Wellies Day

Hi everyone,

Don’t forget tomorrow (Thursday 1st June) is our Winter Woolies and Wellies day! Woohoo!

What to wear to school: old casual clothes and gumboots

What to bring to school: a raincoat, an umbrella, and comfy slippers to be worn inside (please ensure each item is clearly labelled with your child’s name).

What we will be doing:

  • Exploring how materials change through a variety of experiments
  • Looking at the changes in the seasons and weather during Mathematics
  • Jumping in puddles (if there has been lots of rain)
  • Cloud watching
  • Making jelly and popcorn

Walk Safely to School Day

Friday May 19th is National ‘Walk Safely to School’ day.

The objective of the day is to:

  • Encourage families to walk to school
  • Promote the benefits of walking and create regular habits
  • Develop vital road safety skills
  • Reduce car dependency and congestion
  • Reduce the level of air pollution by motor vehicles

If your child is not a regular walker, we are again encouraging our families to make this day an opportunity to have your child walk to school (with under 10 year olds accompanied by an adult).

If you live in Hahndorf, you may want to leave home a little earlier and walk to school from home.

If you live outside of Hahndorf, you could park on the edge of town and walk to school from there.

While walking, you may wish to talk to your child about staying safe as a pedestrian.

Mrs Taylor will be giving out special commemorative stickers at the Balhannah Road school gate for all children who walked to school.

Welcome to Term 2

Welcome back to school and to a new term! We hope you had a lovely break away from school enjoying time spent with family and relaxing. Over the holidays, we were busy planning and organising a range of  engaging activities for the Beginning Learning Community students this term. We are very excited about these amazing experiences that we will have this term-it will certainly be a very busy term!

Mothers Day Stall: On Wednesday 10th May and Thursday 11th May the P&F will be selling a range of goodies in the gym at recess time. A note went home yesterday with some examples of things on offer as well as their prices. You may like to send some money to school in an envelope for your child to spend at the stall.

Mother’s Day Chapel will be held on Friday 12th May and you are all invited to attend this with your child.

Girls Night Out:

St. Michaels Lutheran Church will be holding a Girls Night Out this Saturday night (6th May). It will be from 7:30-10pm and there will be stalls, a silent auction, door prizes, high tea, wine and champagne available, café 3:16 open, photo booth and more! What a great way to spend some time with your friends and perhaps even find something special for Mother’s day.

Unit of Inquiry:

This term we will be undertaking two units of inquiry.

We will be starting with an inquiry into ‘how we organise ourselves’. Our central idea is: ‘we use numbers to understand the world.’ This unit provides the students with a chance to inquire into, and learn about, how we use numbers every day and the importance of the number system.

In the second half of the term the Beginning Learning Community will inquire into ‘Sharing The Planet’. In this unit the Foundations will be involved in learning all about a variety of places around us and thier features. They will explore how to care for these different places as well as why and how different places meet the needs of living things.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics we will be linking our UOI into Number with our Maths lessons. We will be looking at place value, addition and subraction as well as counting collections.

Christian Studies:

In Christian Studies this term we will be developing our understanding of the purpose of the Bible and how it helps up to make decisions and choices.

We hope you are just as excited as we are for this term and we look forward to sharing more about the Foundation and Year 1’s learning journey with you as the term progresses.
